We'd been playing this one a little close to the chest after the fiasco with the house in Spencer.

After that fell through we took a couple days to collect ourselves, re-evaluate what we wanted and where we wanted to be, and started looking again. Looked at ads we'd passed over for various reasons. Narrowed down to a few possibled and got more info on them. One was WAY out there - north of the Hector/Fingerlakes National Forest. The other was listed as an Odessa address, but turned out to be about a couple miles south of Mecklenburg.

I drove by the Odessa one. We made an appointment to look at it a few days later. Other Half and I went to look at it, poked around, and then went to lunch.

As we were eating, I asked her, "So ... what did you really think?" She kinda looked at her plate (oh great), looked at me, and said, "I'm wondering how much we should offer."

We made an offer a couple days later after CJ finished a comp evaluation.

The offer was conditionally accepted within 24 hours with one change. We agreed to the change, and it was off to the races...

Structural inspection was May 15th, with no major surprises. We asked for a couple minor repairs, and the seller agreed to all of them. Radon test came back with acceptable levels.

Applied for the mortgage, and at 1:04pm today, I got the call from the bank - we've been approved!

Our estimated closing date is July 9 ... there's a lot to do in the coming five weeks! NYSEG ... Verizon ... insurance ... goodness me!

Here's the house...

I've been struggling with this decision for an incredibly long time.

I started blogging nearly ten years ago - before the millenium, if I remember right. Nothing fancy, just a simple html file of my own. Somewhere, those files are lurking on a hard drive of mine.

I've made an incredible number of friends through my blog - and perhaps a few enemies.

I've had some passionate debates on myriad topics, and sometimes my views have been shifted.

I've kept up-to-date on numerous people who otherwise might have slipped from my awareness.

I've shared many of my greatest joys and greatest sorrows... and everything in between.

I'm no longer comfortable doing that.

No one thing has been a catalyst for this; it's been only a creeping feeling.

I have neglected too many of my real interpersonal relationships in favor of pixels on a screen.

I am done writing this journal, at least for the time being. I won't say never, because never is a long time.

I am not deleting the journal, and I will continue to read and comment on my friends' journals - too many of you are too important to me. I could never just walk away.

I have privatized my entire history here. (2,792 entries, nearly 11,000 received comments, and a fair portion of almost 11,000 posted comments.)

If something truly momentous occurs, I may post about it - but I find it far more likely that I will try to call, email, or even snail mail the people who matter most in these things.

I may post a picture from time to time - I am trying hard to return to the creative pursuits that have given me joy over many years.

This remains a bittersweet decision.

But for now - for the indefinite future - I am closing the desk drawer. Thank you - all of you, friend and foe - for sharing your lives with me, and allowing me to share mine.

Who is John Galt?
